Amazing how something so light and simple can achieve unparalleled widespread popularity in modern society. Such is the case with the French crêpe. Chiefly made of flour, eggs and milk, with butter to boot, these ultra-thin, delicate pancakes from Burgundy are extremely versatile. Elegant even in their simplest form, crêpes are like blank canvases for culinary creativity, lending themselves to an entire array of toppings and fillings, savory or sweet.
Strawberries and whipped cream is arguably one of the most popular choices, a pioneering combination of fresh fruit and fluffy dairy that brings out the best of these wafer-thin cakes. A crêpe with strawberries and whipped cream is like a cookie with chocolate chips. A donut with glaze icing over it.
Bananas are also a classic topping. Nutella on French pancakes – another perfect pairing. Combine all these together and you get the OG at Crêpe Coop. The OG crêpe doesn’t deviate from the norm; it sticks to what works and remains a hit, as demonstrated by its place atop Crêpe Coop’s menu board. The toppings are classic – quintessential for a sweet crêpe.
Served folded in a cone-shape, the OG Crêpe contains the aforementioned brilliant red strawberries, sweet banana and addictive Nutella spread. In addition, there are nutty almonds, a scoop of indulgent vanilla bean gelato, and airy whipped cream to top it all off.
La crêpe, made with organic eggs, is elegantly prepared right in front of you. The buttery flavored cake has differing consistencies, from the crisp, bare edges that delicately crumble inside your mouth to the springy and soft nature at the apex of the cone. The covered portion gets soft and somewhat soggy, similar to the texture of pancakes. Of course, the best segments are those brittle parts that crack away easily from the rest. Just like those crisp edges on homemade pancakes.
Fragrant strawberries, at the peak of ripeness, offer a sweet, refreshing taste of summer. Freshly sliced bananas, with their slight stickiness and soft flesh, add a tropical fruitiness. Both fruits are beautifully laid out at the mouth of the cone, with some scattered inside the nooks and crannies of the rolled up French cake.
The judicious amount of hazelnut chocolate spread covers a good portion of the thin cake. It complements not only both fruits extremely well, but goes perfectly with the abundant chopped almonds that adhere to the chocolate. Its smoothness is enhanced by the additional puffs of whipped topping, as well as the cold gelato at the heart of the crepe. All this creaminess unites and binds the various flavors in the dish.
Everything goes together exceptionally well: strawberries and bananas, whipped cream with berries, Nutella spread on the fruits and crepe, almonds on gelato. Coalescing everything onto and inside the crepe yields an amalgam of classic flavor pairings that mesh together perfectly into an ultimate crêpe. Altogether, the dish is restrained in sweetness; the fruits shine naturally with the sole sweet culprit being the chocolaty Italian spread, subdued by the crêpe’s subtleness.
An $8.75 price point (no tax is added) at first seems like an overly excessive amount to pay for a single crepe. That’s nearly a whole hour of work at minimum wage! But consider that this is one crepe made with organic ingredients. One crepe loaded with fresh toppings. And one crepe made to order each and every time. Once you consider the stunning visual appeal, the size of la crêpe, the love and care invested in making each one, and the hip environment Crêpe Coop and all of the Packing House has to offer, the cost shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
La OG Crepe. Ooh là là! Just plain good!
