Waffles welcoming you with a warm smile from the world’s most famous mouse to start the day. Mickey designed pretzels fresh out of the oven for an afternoon snack. Chilly ice cream sandwiches imprinted with the iconic Disney mascot to cool down for dessert. When the face of the franchise, with his signature grin and two perfectly round ears, gets stamped onto culinary creations, fans will devour them up. In celebration of the return of one of the most entertaining nighttime spectaculars Fantasmic! the Disneyland Resort has rolled out limited time treats inspired by the sensational show, including limited time blackberry beignets shaped like Mickey Mouse.
Next to jambalaya and gumbo, nothing says New Orleans more than beignets. So it’s fitting you can find these treats at Disneyland’s New Orleans Square. The fried pillows of dough, generally topped with a massive dusting of powdered sugar and paired with a hot cup of coffee, are the perfect breakfast or sweet treat after a long day.
An order of the blackberry beignets at Mint Julep Bar, whether the three or six pack, comes inside a standard white paper bag with a copious amount of blue hued sanding sugar scooped inside. The sparkly crystals magically dust each bloated fried confections as they make their way down the sack before settling at the base, sweet treasure awaiting those that manage to get to the bottom.
Like several other Disney foods, these dainty, puffed up creations come in the form of Mickey Mouse’s silhouette head. The beignets are rather sizable, nearing the width of a napkin. Its thin layer crust is crisp, contrasting with the light, fluffy, cavernous interior. The inside is very airy, with pockets opening up much like an American doughnut. The miniscule sugary grains are hued in purple-blue pigments, with an assortment of silver stars and circles mixed together – sprinkles of the cosmos filled with shooting stars and circular planets that fit in with the imaginative nature of Fantasmic.
Blackberry sprinkles are astonishingly aromatic, imparting a fruity scent that dominates your senses before even making any physical contact with the deep-fried pastries. Magic happens with each and every bite. The sanding sugar gives an enjoyable crunch that complements the dough’s slim crisp exterior. That initial mouthful yields a satisfying combination of the two. Afterwards, the Mickey head deflates as the air from the pockets release.
After two or three of these beignets, the blue gems coat your lips and leave a stain that lasts for the better part of the day. Granted these beignets fall far short in comparison to the piping hot and ultra-crunchy Café Du Monde original in the NOLA, but there is no denying the adorableness of these Disney fritters and the quaint environment that goes along with it. There is simply something special about taking a bite into Mickey-shaped beignets in New Orleans Square at the Happiest Place on Earth.
Tucked away near the railroad stop in New Orleans Square and close to the exit to the Pirates of the Caribbean, Mint Julet Bar is the ideal breakfast or snack stop for any visit to the Disneyland Resort. If beignets are not your thing, stop by for a refreshing, non-alcoholic, lime juice mint julep drink. It’s the perfect beverage for those long summer days.
