Saint Archer Brewing Co. Restaurant – Wild Blueberry Funnel Cake
Saint Archer Brewing Co. Restaurant
Angel Stadium of Anaheim
2000 E Gene Autry Way · Anaheim, CA 92806
The Saint Archer Brewing Company restaurant is a new addition at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, replacing the former Shock Top Brew Pub and the old Knothole Club on Club Level. Equipped with a full bar and tables overlooking right field below, the establishment allows for an amazing experience at the ballpark. Food can be ordered and eaten at tables overlooking the game or taken to-go to be enjoyed at your stadium seat. Many additions can be found on the menu, including a Wild Blueberry Funnel Cake.
Priced at 12.00, the dish features a mountain of fried funnel cake, topped with blueberry compote, sitting next to a piping of whipped sweet cream. A gentle dusting of powdered sugar as light as rain sprinkles coats the surface. The dish comes served on a wooden paddle cutting board. The scouting report is certainly spot-on with the funnel cake; presentation will momentarily divert attention from the diamond to the dessert from those inside the teeming restaurant.
Certainly belonging to the fried food hall of fame, funnel cake is one of those treats that you just have to order when you see it on the menu. The sturdy batter has the ideal texture here – crisp edges and delicate, doughy center – that makes your taste buds beam like it’s on camera. A hint of sugar makes the funnel cake akin to an extra crunchy doughnut, transporting you back to your childhood. And those little bits that trail at the end are the best, basically like little fireworks inside your mouth with the way they crumble.
Blueberries latch onto the sides of the fried dough. Some are tart, others sweet. The berries offer a nice flavor pop to pair with the crunchy, doughy duo. Sweet cream is a much needed topping to break up the crispy/doughy monotony.
Though the treat is decent on the night, it could use some fixing up just like the Angels roster. Firstly, the funnel cake demands more powdered sugar to sweeten up the lineup. When all the fried dough is bunched together and piled high like a celebration, the pieces on the bottom lose out on the confetti fun dazzling on the surface. Additional fruit would also do wonders to provide a fresh spark. Finally, a scoop of chilly ice cream as cold as the Angels bats on the night would do wonders in supplying a thermal contrast to the hot fried batter. Making it a sundae would offer an added textural, creamy component on top of the sweet cream to round out the flavors.
The wild blueberry funnel cake is not a home run, but it is a stand up double. A bit of work on the mechanics and this dessert could definitely hit a triple. Considering that the Saint Archer Brewing Co. Restaurant is the only place in the ballpark you’ll find this specialty (and perhaps even in the surrounding area, not counting the local theme parks), the cost on this one isn’t too bad.
