A gentleman sporting a clean cut goatee, a cheerful demeanor written over his face, seamlessly glides through the compact area in front of the bar, navigating past patrons casually sampling some of the specialty house beer. He coolly palms a plate as he walks into the dining area. Heads curiously turn to catch a glimpse of the polychrome concoction sitting steadily on the center of the clean white dinnerware. Oohs and aahs emanate as the dessert arrives at the table. What is causing such a spectacle here at The Iron Press? Are You Cereal? A waffle infused with Cap’n Crunch, served with a unique maple leche drizzle, a scoop of divine vanilla ice cream and additional maple syrup on the side to boot!
The Iron Press features an assortment of impressive and creative waffles, highlighted by their unique Are you Cereal? dish that flawlessly fuses two traditional breakfast items – cereal and waffles – into a dessert. Coalescing cereal into a waffle? Seems surreal at first. But with the aid of a childhood morning classic, Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries, Are you Cereal? soundly accomplishes this feat.
In a sense, there are two distinct dishes that have been imaginatively combined onto the plate. There is the cereal component, complemented by the milk based products in the silky smooth ice cream and the thick, viscous leche liquid that permeates all the tiny nooks and crannies in the waffle. Then there is the waffle itself with a portion of gooey maple syrup provided on the side. It is the maple milk syrup that links the two, bridging both worlds together into a confectionary dream.
Though the waffle is the foundation of the dish, an exceptional job has been done to incorporate the colorful cereal into every bite. The Cap’n Crunch comes as a topping, both served whole and crushed into miniscule crumbs. The berry bits are like a confetti of fun, delivering a sweet, fruity flavor that pervades every corner of the dish – the waffle itself has crushed fragments mixed right into the dough, resulting in an impressive kaleidoscopic that is simultaneously aesthetically pleasing and satisfyingly sweet. Ice cream at the heart of the plate is further accentuated by the red, blue, green, violet and yellow specks that glitter like sprinkles. A handful of the yellow corn and oat squares, along with the berry flavored orbs, further embellish the surface and complete the final course dish.
The golden waffle itself is executed well. Its edges are delightfully crisp while the center remains fluffy, moist and chewy. Although the melting ice cream steadily makes the middle portion soggy, the captain comes to the rescue, furnishing just the right amount of crunch to compensate for the loss of texture. Meanwhile, the maple milk syrup drizzled over the surface of the waffle can be likened to sweetened condensed milk. It makes eating waffles feel complete, but also affords additional sweetness. Additionally, the rich creaminess from the churned product rounds out the overall flavor.
Finally, the juxtaposition of cold and warm elements does wonders to the overall taste of the dish. Exposing the cereal morsels to the warmth of the waffle press intensifies the flavors and odors, deepening the sweet tones.
At only $7, this waffle creation is not only affordable but also a great value as it is easily shared between two. By all means, Are you Cereal? is an absolute success that evokes childhood memories. The captain with the blue Napoleon-style hat would surely be proud of this dish. Are you Cereal? is also available with Cinnamon Toast Crunch or even Oreo sandwich cookies.
