Sometimes you come across food items that are just too darn cute to eat. Take the creature macarons at Honey & Butter for instance. A daily assortment of creatures is set out at noon, waiting to be adopted and given a home. Corgis, pandas, bears, or even our favorite movie heroes and heroines, there is something for everybody. After purchasing these macarons, the question then becomes – to eat or not to eat? These macarons are too cute to even touch! The dainty confections are decorated skillfully and artfully – the precision and patience is on display in these edible pieces of art.
Macaron making is an art in and of itself. There are various nuances in making this classic French cookie; it is almost like a science. There are the two meringue shells sandwiching a filling in the center, which could be a ganache, buttercream, or jam.
The almond flour shells are extremely delicate, having a light and airy quality and crumbling easy after each bite. Almond flavor really becomes apparent after munching on the cookie parts. Tiny bumpy spots on the surface mean that the almond hadn’t been finely ground enough, but they do add visual texture to the creatures.
Different flavors abound for the creatures here – the Panda has a buttercream filling, the bear a dark chocolate center. For both, the filling appears small at first as it doesn’t extend to the edge like classic macarons. But once you near the center area, it becomes a bit too overbearing. Not in terms of sweetness, but rather in opulence. Like a double stuffed cookie sandwich will all the filling centered in the absolute middle. For the panda macaron, for example, the buttercream takes control and tips the balance into its favor. The refined cookie discs are merely textural contributions that sink to the background, contributing a very subtle almond aftertaste. The bear macaron eats similarly – the rich dark chocolate commands the flavor experience, with the nutty undertones coming through towards the backend.
On this occasion, the bear outperforms the panda. Rilakkuma manages to beat the Kung Fu Panda. Both macarons are balanced in terms of sweetness, which is a definite plus. But the bruin’s dark chocolate ganache teams up better with the almond notes than the buttercream, resulting in a more pleasurable experience.
All in all, Honey & Butter does an amazing job making these already popular, trendy treats into something even better, adding an even more incredible visual effect. Macarons usually come in fun colors and unique flavors; decorating them into popular characters and cute creatures gives them additional appeal that people of all ages, especially kids, will love.
Macarons are often seen as higher-end, sophisticated treats, due to the labor involved in production. The resulting price tag reflects this as each character macaron starts at $3. In the end, you will end up feeling guilty for eating these adorable creatures. Not only because these bears and pandas are delightful to look at, but also due to the underwhelming taste experience. With flavors like Nutella or churro, matcha or Fruity Pebbles, the regular macarons may be better suited for consuming. Save these photogenic creations for social media, giving as gifts, or simply decorating inside your refrigerator!
